Intravenous Adenosine is drug of choice to convert Paroxysmal Supra Ventricular Tachycardia to a Normal Sinus Rhythm. Injection Adenosine has very short life of 10 seconds. So, To attain the maximum efficiency of the drug, following facts to be remembered.
- Inject Adenosine through an IV Line as close to the heart as possible. (e.g. Antecubital vein)
- Inject Adenosine rapidly in 1 to 2 seconds followed by rapid 20ml normal saline flush.
- Monitor patient’ ECG continuously, brief period of asystole is common.
- Observe the patient for side effects. E.g. Flushing, dizziness,nausea, metalic taste (this is hall mark side effect of adenosine). These symptoms usually lasts less than a minute.
